Description

The mid-range model in Samsung’s 2021 4K QLED line-up, the Q70A is an elegant looking 4K option with a whole raft of features for home cinema, TV and gaming addicts alike. It’s also a considerably less expensive option than any of Samsung’s recently released Neo QLED Mini LED range. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying a live scene and white square taking up 60% of the screen (measured in Nits) To cap it all off, the design of this QE55Q70BATXXUQLED TV is second to none, with its super thin bezel and stunning looks. We uploaded the initial brightness measurements and uniformity photos for the Accelerated Longevity Test.

We did quite a bit of comparison testing with the Q70R up against the Sony XG95, which is very close on features and price point, as well as some testing against a Philips OLED+903 OLED. We used the calibration controls available in the menu system to correct the greyscale and white point. As you can see, the calibrated results were reference level as DeltaE errors were all under 1 – so well below the visible threshold and no tint was seen in actual viewing material. As mentioned, the 10% stimulus error in the gamma is due to the local dimming not keeping up with our meter measuring, so we are not concerned about this. The QE55Q70BATXXUhas a Quantum 4K processor that makes navigating through the menus and smart features of this lovely set easy and fast as well as optimising the picture and sound to give you the best possible experience possible. Multitasking between apps, menus and settings is a breeze for the QE55Q70BATXXUas well as optimising the picture quality for omtimum viewing at all times. The Samsung Q70 produced some lovely HDR images... even if it isn’t as impressive as its more expensive siblings. Since Bixby is actually built into the TV, rather than simply working with another device that includes a smart assistant, the experience is largely seamless. Bixby is best accessed by simply pressing the mic button on the remote. There is a near-field mic built into the TV but we’d recommend turning that off, unless you want Bixby springing into life every 10 minutes. We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for four months in our Accelerated Longevity Test. Percentage luminance drop at 20 degree vertical angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white outputThere is no Dolby Vision support and that may be an issue for a TV set in 2019, but it does support HDR10+ dynamic metadata and this is an impressive HDR experience compared to the static HDR10 approach. Watching Bohemian Rhapsody, which is HDR10+ on 4K Blu-ray, we found the approach to be far more nuanced and not as overly bright with some skin tones. Everything was more balanced with no obvious signs of the local dimming getting in the way, instead, we got the best possible image the Q70R is capable of, something dynamic metadata is designed to do. Percentage luminance drop at 35 degree horizontal angle from the centre of the screen with 100% white output We've retested the VRR, input lag, and supported resolutions with an HDMI 2.1 source and firmware version 1403. For the full next-gen gaming experience, however, we’d recommend opting for a cheaper model like the Samsung Q95T, which has VRR, ALLM as well as 4K 120Hz capabilities for a lower price. It can deliver 100% of the DCI-P3 wider colour gamut, and in testing it produced a peak brightness of 800 nits on a 10% window. We often use Gravity as a test for local dimming, because the star fields and bright white space suits are a real challenge. In general the Q70 handle this difficult material well, with very little haloing, blooming or clipping. However there were a couple of occasions where the local dimming was caught out, although with the less challenging content that was rarely an issue. The Samsung Q70 QLED looks functional rather than flashy, and while it retains the same basic styling as the rest of Samsung's 2019 QLED range, it also reflects the lower price point.
